Co-op, Lab Automation - Anagenex (January - June 2023, Lexington)

To apply! → Anagenex - Co-op, Lab Automation (January - June 2023)
Meet Anagenex.

At Anagenex, we combine machine learning with massively parallel biochemical tools such as DNA Encoded Libraries (DELs) and Affinity Selected Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) to analyze more compounds more efficiently than ever before. By working with large datasets throughout our search process and letting our machine learning model guide our experiments, we are able to find molecules for the hardest problems in drug discovery, bringing first in class and best in class treatments to patients.

As a fully integrated team of experts in biology, chemistry and machine learning, we work as one to find new medicines. Collaborating across these divergent disciplines gives team members exposure and understanding into differing approaches for solving complex challenges. Autonomy and trust ground our flexible working environment, enabling us to succeed against a broad range of targets in drug discovery.

Introducing: Co-op, Lab Automation.

We are looking for a 6 month co-op (Jan. - Jun. 2023) to join our agile automation team, developing new automated and semi-automated workflows to support drug discovery. Your dedication to accuracy and efficiency will ensure the automation equipment is well-maintained while you run development tests independently. Team members will rely on you as a level-headed and knowledgeable partner when experiments inevitably fail or encounter errors, investigating causes and recommending solutions based on your detailed findings. Collaboration will be key as you work alongside our executives and department leads, ultimately driving revolutionary drug discovery.

You’ll own:

  • Co-op project: Select your project from a long list of manual procedures scheduled for conversion to fully/semi-automated processes. Projects are available for chemistry, Biochemistry, Cell biology, sample management, and others.
  • Hamilton Automated Liquid Handling Equipment: Be the operator on the automated liquid handling equipment within the lab, including running experiments, measuring output, and communicating out how the results impact different areas of research.
  • Training: Develop training materials and guide team members on production processes using the automation tools within the lab.
  • Documentation: Keep a detailed electronic lab notebook, collaborate on code documentation, and author standard operating procedures.
  • Recovery: In the event of errors or crashes, identify the causes and run fixes and recovery procedures.

You’ll assist:

  • Deployment: Explore and deploy novel technologies to accelerate automation processes.
  • Prioritization: Actively advise on automation priorities through your learnings from coordinating projects and iterating on existing processes.

Skills & expertise you have:

  • Interest in running and troubleshooting automated liquid handlers, such as the Hamilton Microlab Star.
  • Wet lab experience performing a variety of skills and techniques in a laboratory environment.
  • Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in biology, chemistry, engineering, or related fields.

Skills & expertise you can learn:

  • Agile methodology in project management.
  • Cross functional collaboration with senior scientific staff.
  • Use and maintenance of common and specialty lab equipment.
  • Biotech/pharma/startup industry experience.

Within 1 month, you’ll…

  • Maintain and run experiments using a Hamilton automated liquid handler according to established SOPs.
  • Handle common errors and recover runs after equipment failure.
  • Independently run water tests for methods in development.
  • Select your co-op project.

Within 3 months, you’ll…

  • Lead the planning and execution of method development for your project.
  • Provide crash recovery support for equipment with hardware/software issues during research runs.

Within 6 months, you’ll…

  • Conclude your co-op project
  • Author a poster capturing your co-op project and present results to the company.

When you submit your application, please provide a cover letter highlighting why this opportunity is a good fit for you, including the classes and assignments you have taken that are applicable to the role.
