DIY Lab Shaker for 3D Prints or Lab Stuff

This is a DIY lab shaker for resource constrained labs or tinkerers.

The use case is to help dissolve PVA support material but I’m sure there are other use cases. What’s extra neat is that the code is in Python.

If you are interested in creating a DIY lab shaker using 3D prints or other lab materials, here are some general steps to consider:

  1. Design the shaker: Determine the size, shape, and specifications of the lab shaker you want to create. Consider factors such as the maximum load capacity, shaking speed, and any additional features you want to incorporate, such as timers or adjustable settings.
  2. Create a 3D model: If you plan to use 3D printing, design the shaker model using computer-aided design (CAD) software. Ensure that the design accounts for stability, durability, and any necessary attachments or holders for lab vessels.
  3. 3D print the parts: Once the design is complete, use a 3D printer to fabricate the individual parts of the shaker. Depending on the size and complexity of the shaker, you may need to print multiple parts and assemble them.
  4. Assemble the shaker: Follow the assembly instructions provided with the 3D prints, if available. Attach the printed parts together using screws, nuts, or other appropriate fasteners. Make sure the assembly is secure and stable.
  5. Motor and power source: Choose a suitable motor that can provide the required shaking motion and speed. Consider using a stepper motor or a DC motor with a speed controller. Connect the motor to a power source, such as a power supply or batteries, based on the motor’s requirements.
  6. Wiring and control: Connect the motor to an appropriate control system. This can include a microcontroller or a motor driver module. Ensure that the wiring is properly connected and secured, following safety guidelines.
  7. Test and calibrate: Power on the shaker and test its shaking function. Adjust the shaking speed and motion as needed, ensuring it meets your desired specifications. Test the shaker with various sample containers to ensure compatibility and stability.
  8. Safety precautions: When working with DIY lab equipment, it is essential to prioritize safety. Ensure that the shaker is stable, and all electrical connections are secure. Follow appropriate safety protocols and guidelines when using the shaker, such as wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and avoiding excessive loads or vibrations.

Note: Building DIY lab equipment requires technical skills and knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems. If you are unfamiliar with these aspects, it is advisable to consult experts or seek professional guidance to ensure safety and functionality.
